Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a master of the short story. The son of a former serf in southern Russia, he attended Moscow University to study medicine, writing short stories for periodicals in order to support his family. What began as a necessity became a legitimate career in 1886 when he was asked to write in St. Petersburg for the Novoye Vremya (New Times), owned by millionaire magnate Alexey Suvorin. Chekhov began paying more attention to his writing, revising and developing his own principles and conceptions of truth, for a time coming under the influence of Leo Tolstoy. As a result of his widespread popularity, Chekhov amassed a vast collection of short stories displaying an early use of stream-of-consciousness writing, as well as his powerful ideas concerning the individual, the tedium of life, and the beauty nature and humanity. This edition contains "The Duel", "Excellent People", "Mire", "Neighbors", "At Home", "Expensive Lessons", "The Princess", and "The Chemist's Wife".

The Duel and Other Stories Anton Pavlovich Chekhov Constance Garnett 9781420938692 Books

The Duel is a story that I have come back to again and again over the years. In it, Chekhov exhibits an understanding of masculinity, honor, and lust that even Hemingway couldn't explain. The Dover has a clear, cogent translation. Highly recommended.

This book succeeds as an example of the duelling mentality of the time and place in which it was set. In this respect it serves both as history and as a statement on human obsession. The narrative, with its' impeccable pace and tempo, invests the narrative with qualities that serve not only the finest short stories but perhaps the best of novellas
My daughter just finished earning a degree from Emory University, a double major, in creative writing, and in Russian/Eastern European studies. She loves the Russian novelists. And she ADORES Chekov. So she made me read this. I hated it from the outset. No single character made me sympathize. But my wife said, "Keep reading." I did. Before the end, I was hooked. The story is amazing. Chekov is amazing. I may have to read everything of his my daughter owns! Try it. Stick with it.
Checkhov is a master at short stories. Do yourself a favor and read him.
Read this a reminder before watching the movie. it's better now than when I read it in school.
Chekhov stories take you to the idyllic countryside of Mother Russia. His characters are real-life like and no matter how banal their story is, I always find myself drawn in. At times he almost made me want to go visit. But then again ...
Xist Publishing has started in 2011 by publishing childrens' books in a digital format. They have recently branched out into digital publishing various literary classics. As the copyrights have lapsed, the investment is only into the conversion of the text into digital form and, as a rule, the books are either free or very competitively priced. Whatever the commercial/ideological background of this enterprise, it does bring great classics into your for next to nothing.
This one is a small collection of Chekov's short stories, although "The Duel" is really a short novella. In a word, Chekov, the great Russian playwright, is GREAT, even in a format that he is less well known for. However, his short stories are as depressing as his dramas. We are introduced into the languid labyrinth world of the Russian intelligentsia of the late 19th century, where the rot of the absolutistic regime affects the lives of the middle class, the impoverished petty nobility, and the civil service.Chekov is no social reformer, but rather sees the protagonists through the dark glasses of despair and hopelessness/helplessness. His "Heroes/Heroines" are self-centered, self-pitying, bigoted, neurotic, pseudo-intellectual, boring, and above all, lonely. While Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky preached returning to old Russian Christian values, Chekov offers no suggestions, only terrible angst. The best are The Duel and Excellent People, while Mire, by today's standards, is clearly antisemitic. Chekov's view of the Russian Jew clearly reflected the general prejudice and hatred that fomented the infamous Pale of Settlement and the pogroms. Nevertheless, great literature!
A note about the translation Mostly very good, though lacking in Russian "feel". However, Anna Karenina is such a universal idiom that Anna Karenin is unforgivable!
This is a clean version. The translation is good and the stories are easy to read. Of the major Russian authors, Chekhov is probably the easiest to read. This would be 5 stars if it had a table of contents.
The Duel is a story that I have come back to again and again over the years. In it, Chekhov exhibits an understanding of masculinity, honor, and lust that even Hemingway couldn't explain. The Dover has a clear, cogent translation. Highly recommended.
